About
From the point of view of the bushes.
I am drawn to what others find slight, overlooked, beside the point. I believe it is the banks that shape the course of the river. So in my writing I look under the lining: not to take up a subject that does not matter, but to look at something that matters a great deal from an angle that is not obvious at all.
I was born in 1981 in Miechów, a town beneath which a kilometre and a half of medieval tunnels was discovered in 2026. (Which thrills me no end.) I am a sociologist and I also completed Gender Studies. In 2015 I defended my PhD at the University of Warsaw on intimate and family relationships built outside the norm of monogamy. Sociology is my frame of thinking, one I love to slip out of in order to explore other territories, and one I always return to, because it lets me look at relationships between people tenderly and precisely at the same time.
I write poems, short stories, novels and auto-non-fiction. I love trying new forms and setting myself writing challenges. I have published eight books: three poetry collections, two volumes of short stories, the novel “Zwiezda” and two works of auto-non-fiction. In “Synu, jesteś kotem” (My Son, You Are a Cat) my son, who is on the autism spectrum and was seventeen while I was writing it, speaks in his own voice. “Gdzie zgłosić dzikie zwierzę” (Where Do I Report a Wild Animal) is a purely literary project, unsparingly honest about myself, in which I examine the process of being diagnosed with ADHD and what it does to me. My books have won the Bierezin Competition and the Złoty Środek Competition, and have been shortlisted for the Gdynia Literary Prize and the Kazimierz Hoffman KOS Poetry Prize.
Many of my texts were written in unlikely circumstances, because change is an enormous inspiration to me. Most of “Klub snów” I wrote in 2017 at the Can Serrat residency, and the first version of “Zwiezda” in 2022 at the Visegrad residency in Prague. I spend the cold half of the year in Andalusia, where I have my community, the sun and the wind.
Without people I wither. For five years I co-edited the literary magazine “Drobiazgi”, where many now established writers first appeared in print. Between 2021 and 2026 I was an editor and writer at the magazine “Kosmos dla Dziewczynek”, for which I also co-wrote, as lead author, two guides for girls: “Przewodnik po koleżankowaniu się” and “Przewodnik po dziewczyńskich grupkach”. I worked for a time with Ulica Siostrzana organising feminist camps, I wrote features for “Przekrój”, Gazeta.pl and “Kosmos dla Dziewczynek”, and I run writing workshops in which I do not lecture anyone but show the paths a text can take. I am good at finding what people are capable of. I belong to Unia Literacka.
Once a subject has me, I am gone. I will not rest until I have finished what I set out to do. I go where my next fascination carries me, and anyone who would like to limit me or regulate my course will get nowhere. With every new book, writing becomes more important to me. In 2027 my mosaic novel “Ćwierćświatek” will be published by Wydawnictwo Biblioteki Śląskiej.
